screechfox: AO3 tags reading "it's less of a fix-it and more of a "ruin it differently"" (ao3 tags: ruin it differently)

I was planning to use the same questions I answered last year (courtesy of [personal profile] anysin, who I forgot to credit then, though I don't know the original provenance), but given how little I've written this year, I thought I'd just do a short retrospective on my own initiative instead.

So, I wrote and posted five fics this year (six, counting one anonymous one), assuming I don't manage to squeeze any more out in the next eleven days:

  • dear lady stowaway, OW about a stowaway princess and the pirate captain who takes a liking to her

  • from the labyrinth fly free, an Arcane wingfic about Viktor giving himself wings with the Hex-core accidentally

  • false heart's devotion, CQL/MDZS AU, with Wang Lingjiao as ambitious concubine to Empress Yu Ziyuan

  • unharnessed, a TMA ficlet about the relationship between Mike Crew and Simon Fairchild

  • uncommon cause, a Guild Wars 2 fic about a sylvari Vigil soldier meeting a Nightmare Courtier during the campaign against Mordremoth

All but one of those were for exchanges which took place in January (Bulletproof and the TMA Minor Characters flash exchange); the other, I wrote in a state of hyperfocus in August. It's not nearly as much as I'd hoped to write -- I'd pledged to write 75k words in [community profile] getyourwordsout this year, and those fics account for 12k of the roughly 40k that I've ended up writing in total.

I don't know for sure why I had so much trouble writing this year. I can hypothesise: getting into new hobbies or being immersed in old ones, the lack of a solid hyperfixation of a fandom to fix my attention on, a shift in my approach to writing that's meant I've been overthinking or second-guessing a lot of what I write. Life circumstances have also played their part, a lot of upheaval and other things that needed my attention and time.

As for next year's goals... Life should be a lot steadier, for the next year and a half, at least. I'm going to sign up for [community profile] getyourwordsout again, but I think my focus should be on making writing a habit in my life, as opposed to how much I can produce. I'm going to pick a habit pledge, but I haven't decided which yet - I'll either go with 120 days or 180 days. I wrote on roughly 100 days this year without putting too much effort in, so I think both of those are doable, it's just the question of how much to challenge myself.

I'm probably also going to sign up for Bulletproof again. Nominations are open, and I've submitted a few tags. I think the freeform relaxed nature of it worked really well for me last year. Possibly too well, since it accounts for half of my finished projects for this year!

I have a million WIPs and/or kinkmeme prompts I'd like to fill, but a few ""must-finish"" projects for next year:

  • The SangYao and SangYu duology of angsty portraiture. Possibly with less-angsty additions of SangXuan and a Qin Su-centric fic to complete the set of Jin siblings.

  • F!Nie Huaisang/Jin Guangyao arranged marriage fic, which also promises to be angsty, but I've only roughly sketched out the key plot of, and I don't have an ending yet

  • Jiang Yanli gets thoroughly whumped by Wang Lingjiao, sorry JYL

  • An A/B/O fic where Wang Lingjiao gets Wen Qing to induce her heat

  • Maybe 2023 will be the year where I finally finish my passion project Homestuck fic

  • I'd also like to carry on with my rewrite of how big, how blue, how beautiful, if only because I want to bookbind it but my original 2019 version of it doesn't spark joy any more
